Hand-painted silk scarf: Bugs and Blossoms

Silk (habotai 8 – medium weight silk) scarf with rolled hem. 45 x 180 cm extra-long. Hand-painted using gutta and silk paints. From the ‘Summer Creatures’ Series.

I have been obsessed with drawing bees, snails, ladybirds and dragonflies for a while now (here is one of my sketchbook inspirations for this series). It simply felt natural while basking in sunny spring days, to put them on a sunshine yellow scarf with a silvery white snail-trail and blossoming flowers, a little further into the summer than the previous scarf in the series – The Love Bugs.

As before, I applied the snail trail with colourless water-based gutta resist. The background yellow was then applied, and anti-difusant applied on top in order to restrict the flow of the colours and allow me to paint the fine details of each creature freehand.
