Client: Lalit Kala Akademi, India
The thrice-yearly issue of the Lalit Kala Contemporary, a magazine released by the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi, was suspended in 2006 (LKC 51). A revival of the series was planned for 2012 (LKC 52: Depth of Field), and as there were no existing templates available, I was asked to design a completely new template for the 96-page issue.
Previous editions had been printed in black & white on uncoated paper with a few colour plates on art paper. For this new revival, the specifications were modified to full colour, and though this was an issue on photography including many black and white photographs contributed by leading practitioners, these would be printed in 4-colour or duotone.
The aim of the Akademi being to project this Contemporary magazine as a serious art journal rather than a ‘glossy’, a sober and academic design was called for.
